This particular Friday, I ordered the Garden Tofu scramble, which has cabbage, carrots, onions and garlic. In the past, I have tried their Tofu Southwest (with yummy fresh salsa) and I have also gotten a spinach and garlic scramble as well. I can heartily recommend any of them, and there are numerous combinations you can make depending on your mood and what you choose from the ingredient list, if you want to try something a little different than what is listed on the menu. I also ordered their home fries and sourdough toast with no butter. (The sourdough bread is vegan, and I think other breads might be too, but that is the one I usually get.) After breakfast we felt fortified and satisfied and ready to pursue our weekend fun. It was a great way to spend the morning and I don't think you can ever go wrong having breakfast at Old Town. Incidentally, they also have a lunch menu and I have eaten there for lunch as well and have always enjoyed it. But that is the subject of a future blog post at a later time...
I am a vegan in Bellingham who hopes to highlight some of the vegan friendly restaurants in B'ham (and sometimes beyond). I will also throw in some of my own cooking, because let's face it I can't eat out every day, plus I love to cook! I may also touch on other vegan-related issues, and it is my hope that the info in this blog may be useful to vegans and friends/family of vegans who are searching for tasty food ideas or places to eat and socialize together. Old Town Cafe 316 W. Holly St.
Breakfast out that consists of something more than a fruit plate or oatmeal with no milk is really rare for a vegan. That is why vegans in Bellingham are so lucky there is Old Town Cafe. The weekend before last, my husband and I were fortunate enough to have three days off, and we kick-started our weekend with breakfast at Old Town. Since it was a Friday, and we are early-risers, there was no wait for us. Our timing was perfect and we were seated immediately at one of my favorite booths. Old Town is a Bellingham hot spot, especially during the later morning hours of Saturday and Sunday, so be sure you sign your name to the list at the front counter if you get there and have to wait. Luckily, even if you do have to wait, it is worth it because their tofu scrambles are delicious! And for the non-vegans who may be accompanying you, there are plenty of options as well. Old Town uses local and organic ingredients whenever possible, and their food is always fresh and good.

i get so excited to go to old town cafe on saturdays with my husband and my daughter. it's definitely one of my most favorite places! i loove the "garden tofu tortilla" (no cheese please!) yum!
Old Town is the best breakfast place in town. And as far as I know, the ONLY place for a vegan breakfast. I love the variety of tofu scrambles you can choose from. I don't know what I would do without Old Town for breakfast!
Has anyone noticed a sad decline in quality, particularly in the potatoes? They're so often burnt, which is so disappointing to my Irish soul!
I have had a couple of times when my potatoes were a little dry and burnt, but I have hoped they were just rare accidents--I tell myself everyone has an off day from time to time. Hopefully it is not indicative of anything consistent.
I wanted to send a big thank you cuz my husband and I live in Vancouver and drive to Bellingham for shopping sometimes. We had no idea there were so many vegan options in Bellingham and on our first time around we were starved and just drove back home thinking nothing would be available.
I quickly looked at your site before we crossed the border and lost cell phone service and took a guess on old town cafe. Looked good enough so we headed there for brunch. I'm glad we did and now we're excited we can have some more options now that you've alerted us to some places.
I don't do restaurant blogging on my site but I do share my recipes on my own website www.lowfatveganchef.com if you want to check it out.
Thanks for the help
Veronica
Hi Veronica--I am so glad! That makes me very happy, especially because I know how amazingly vegan-friendly Vancouver is. My husband and I are coming up in a couple of weeks for a weekend of veg-feasting--so many places to choose from! BTW, thanks for the link to your site--it looks awesome--I am going to enjoy looking through it!
